Gerry and Doreen Cooper of Red Deer, Alberta, didn’t lack for customer service when they arrived at the Hampton Inn by Hilton Sydney on April 18 to register as the new hotel’s first guests.

Looking on with interest during the official opening of the eagerly anticipated $20-million hotel were owner Danny Murphy of Charlottetown, Membertou Chief Terry Paul and hotel manager Jeff Boudreau.

The Hampton Inn by Hilton Sydney, a partnership between Membertou and D.P. Murphy Hotels and Resorts, has 128 guest rooms offering free high-speed internet access, cable TV and many other extras. There are also suites for guests seeking more space and kitchenettes for guests looking to feel more at home.

In addition to the well-appointed guest rooms, the hotel features a gym/fitness centre, swimming pool with waterslide, and boardroom for meetings. There is even more to be discovered through the adjoining pedestrian walkway which leads to the Membertou Trade & Convention Centre. MTCC boasts the appetizing food of Kiju’s restaurant, as well as a wide variety of entertainment, conferences, and special events.

“It certainly fits in very well with the trade centre,” Chief Paul said at the ground breaking ceremony for the hotel.

In addition to the Hampton Inn by Hilton attracting more conventions and conferences to MTCC, hotels and other businesses throughout Cape Breton Regional Municipality are expected to benefit.

“The opening of this hotel means a lot to Membertou,” said Chief Paul. “We will be working together with the trade and convention centre as partners.”
